Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Volunteers serve as the basis to carryout programs in every county to extend the reach of the 4-H professional, and are especially instrumental in providing local youth with a premier 4-H Summer Camp experience. In the 2015 summer camp season, the Christian County 4-H Program secured five volunteers to accompany the county extension agents and intern to West Kentucky 4-H Camp. Of these volunteers, three were teen volunteers and two were adult.

The following year, Christian County experienced a 40% decrease in volunteer participation as it relates to the 4-H Summer Camping program. This decrease was attributed to only two adult volunteers accompanying the county extension agents to 4-H Camp with youth. 4-H Camp 2017 was a complete turn-a-round from the two previous years. In July 2017, Christian County 4-H doubled its volunteer participation from 2015 and increased it by 200% from the previous year. In the most recent camping season six teens and four adult volunteers accompanied three interns, one SNAP-ED Assistant and four county extension agents to camp, yielding its largest camp group in the last five years.

Contributions to this success come from gifts from community sponsors, the Christian County Extension District Board, and the Christian County 4-H Council. In total, more than $5000 was gifted to alleviate costs for camp participants with a portion allocated specifically to cost of volunteers. As the Christian County 4-H Program continues to grow its summer camp program, it is hoped to continue to grow the volunteer base that is significant in experiencing the magic of 4-H Camp.
