In Kenton County with a population of 166,051 with 14.1% over 65 years of age, many are beginning the planning process needed to distribute their assets. Managing financial risks is an important part of financial stability. Regardless of how many assets are owned, estate planning is needed to protect, and help ensure, personal and financial goals are realized after death. Many individuals fail to plan for the transfer of their possessions and property. Leaving others to settle the estate, pay tax obligations, and handle family disputes. Tying up matters in courts, cost time and money. The Kentucky State Area Specialist working with local financial specialists has held classes on estate planning, wills, annuities, and trusts to assist these consumers in making wise financial decisions. Four parts of an estate plan include, wills, health care directives, trusts, and power of attorney. The two-hour classes were held annually.
In the past five years, 12 families have completed their estate plans, and many others have requested additional information or returned to classes to ask further questions. Each year, attendees have brought other family members or requested information to be mailed to them. The class this spring reached 21 individuals and additional classes are planned for the fall. One participant stated” she felt a sense of relief that her financial matters were settled the way she wanted” and brought her brother to a class so he could begin the process also.
