Poultry Production

Author: John Fourqurean

Planning Unit: Trigg County CES

Major Program: Poultry

Plan of Work: Livestock Production

Outcome: Initial Outcome

As the Poultry industry continues to grow in the state of Kentucky and McLean County ranks as the number 2 county out of 120 counties for Poultry production, the McLean County Extension Agent for Agriculture and Natural Resources recognized a need for educational opportunities in poultry house management. Working in cooperation with The University of Georgia Extension Service, this agent hosted a webinar in the fall of 2018 and the spring of 2019 to better educate poultry producers in McLean County.

Due to the fact that that the large poultry companies provide all the nutritional product, data and information for their birds, this agent saw a need for more education about things that are under the control of the producer. Ventilation, Fans, humidity, static pressure and maintenance are all things a producer can increase his efficiency on to affect bird development and health and his or her financial position. These webinars dealt directly with those issues depending on the season that the producers were headed in to. These webinars were highly intensive management workshops with the latest technology and experts in those fields.

These webinars provided producers with an opportunity to learn from the best specialist in the poultry industry today, using the latest technology. The producers also received valuable handouts with material related to the webinar and the presentations to use as references to the various topics when the producer got back to their operation. All the participants at the webinar thought the information provided would be very beneficial to their operations. Having this centralized opportunity to attend this webinar saved each participant over $300 due to savings in registration fees and travel expenses to the actual conference.
