Planning Unit: Spencer County CES

Major Program: Natural Resources 4-H Core Curriculum

Plan of Work: Sustainable Agriculture, Non-Traditional Agriculture, and Natural Resources

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Spencer County was one of the three counties in Kentucky 4-H to pilot the first Kentucky 4-H Hunters for the Hungry campaign.  The goal for the first year was to have 10 deer donated per county.  Spencer County 4-H exceeded the Kentucky Hungers for the Hungry Executive Director’s expectations by collected 9 does this year in a short 6 week time frame from the introductory meeting throughout the completion of hunting season.

According their webpage, “Kentucky Hunters for the Hungry, KHFH, is a charitable volunteer run organization comprised of responsible hunters and conservationist who encourage hunters to harvest and donate deer each season.  Kentucky ranks fifth in the nation for percentage of residents living in poverty at 17%.”

Spencer County 4-H Shooting Sports opted to help with this program to help those in need locally.  9 Youth and Volunteers donated does through this program.  Herndon Taxidermy, a local processor, processed the meat for our program and actually donated ¼ of the processing funds, which equaled $157.54.  Spencer County 4-H Council donated the other ¼ at $157.54 and the Hunters for the Hungry organization donated $325 for the processing of the Spencer County deer which equaled ½ of the fees. Through this generosity, 1800 meals were provided by Spencer County 4-H to the Multipurpose Community Action food bank for local families.

Tim Brewer, Spencer County 4-H Shooting Sports Coordinator said, “Our 4-H group takes pride in giving back to our community and this is just another tool we can use to do it.   Thank you to Kentucky 4-H and KHRH for the opportunity to partake in this new program, we look forward to working with Hunters for the Hungry and sharing more with our community.”
