The Pulaski County Extension Service has collaborated with the Pulaski County Association Substance Abuse Prevention Committee to educate the students and people of Pulaski County on the danger of substance abuse. Data collected from the Pulaski County School System at the end of the year shows a decrease in the abuse of narcotics or drugs that require a doctor’s prescription from 11.5 percent abusing to 3 percent the past year. The use of methamphetamine and Marijuana also showed a decline. The usage of Marijuana went from 22 percent down to 13 percent. Only 3% of the students reported using OxyContin and cocaine during the past 30 days. Students reported that the availability and ease of getting drugs was still very high, ranging from 59% to 81%. Pulaski ASAP will continue to work to inform the public of the danger of using drugs and will continue programs in all of the schools to educate the students of substance abuse. The passage of House Bill 3 and Senate Bill 5 requiring schools to do Substance Abuse Education in School will also help in keeping students informed of the danger of using drugs.
