Wellness Challange - Agriculture Classes

Author: Clay Stamm

Planning Unit: Rowan County CES

Major Program: Local Food Systems

Plan of Work: Promote Health and Wellness

Outcome: Initial Outcome

As I move forward in my career as a Cooperative Extension Agent the chance to team up with community partners for great programs increases, and what a blessing that is! During the winter of 2018-2019 I was approached by members of the Clark County Activity Coalition to participate in the Clark County Wellness Challenge by teaching agriculture classes that promoted healthy eating and activity. Commercial agriculture in reality is hard work and promotes physical fitness but I decided it would be better suited for the audience to offer a couple of outside the box educational opportunities. To begin I taught a Hunting 101 Workshop. Only four people participated, however, all participants were new to the Extension Service and absolutely enjoyed the workshop. The second class offered was Backyard Poultry Basics. This session was attended by 21 people, 11 females and 10 males.  It was a good mix of existing poultry farmers and some that were just researching poultry care. Many of the 21 attendees were new to the Cooperative Extension Service! Many of the participants of both classes were interested in obtaining their own food sources through poultry and hunting. The physical requirements that comes from both of these activities were a draw as well. I am fortunate to have been able to partner with this community group and look forward to the programs we can work on in the future.
