Since August of 2013 the Bullitt County Extension Service and the Bullitt County Detention Center's Substance Abuse Program has partnered to bring nutrition to the men in that group. The Substance Abuse Program is on a volunteer basis and approximately 327 men have graduated the program. Though not all can be counted for our program all the men have been able to take the nutrition class.
On April 11th of 2019 we had invited an Extension Specialist for Substance Use Prevention and Recovery from the University of Kentucky to come speak to the class. He discussed how nutrition and your environment play a big part in recovery. He also told them that in order to succeed that many times you need to remove yourself from the environment you were in to begin with.
The following week after the visit I had numerous men coming up to me to let me know that they never realized the importance of good nutrition and recovery. The men told me that they were going to make an effort when they were released to eat healthier and to make sure their families did as well.
