Explore Kentucky with Us Passport Program

Author: Audrey Myers

Planning Unit: Taylor County CES

Major Program: Kentucky Extension Homemaker Association

Plan of Work: Unrelated to a specified County Plan of Work

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

The Cultural Arts & Heritage program area covers a wide and diverse subject that includes fine arts and crafts, heritage and history of both Kentucky and world cultures, literacy and reading as well as other areas that cover an appreciation of both the Kentucky and world culture.  Many of our Extension Homemakers have never “explored” Kentucky outside of Taylor County, or had the opportunity to see the vast cultural and history so close to home.   The county Cultural Arts & Heritage Chairman wanted to create an opportunity for our members to explore Kentucky, hence the name “Explore Kentucky with Us.”  We created a “passport” with many different places to explore.  Each month we feature a different location in Kentucky to visit and learn about.  Some of the places we have visited include Stanford, Kentucky (Main Street Kentucky) Frankfort Capitol and Governor’s Mansion & Rebecca Ruth’s Candies, Toyota of Georgetown Plant, Federal Grove (how maple syrup is made), American Printing House for the Blind, National Corvette Museum and a Powderpuff Mechanics class, Cave Hill Cemetery, and Green River Lake Dam and Visitor’s Center.   This program has been incredibility popular, helping us gain about 20 new members.  Many homemakers commented on how much they have learned and have gained a new appreciation of what Kentucky offers.  One homemaker stated, “I’ve never had the opportunity to visit many places outside of Taylor County.  This is my first time visiting Frankfort.”  This program has been adopted by the state and will be featured as a state program for the 2019-2020 homemaker year.
