Major Program: Making Healthy Lifestyle Choices (general)

Plan of Work: Making Healthy Lifestyle Choices

Outcome: Initial Outcome

The gluten-free diet is emerging as one of the most popular trend on the market, but gluten seems to be widely misunderstood. In response to requests for more information on gluten-free diets, The Gluten-Free Choice Is it for me? class was offered in Green County.

Participants that were able to attend the lesson also received a sample of a gluten-free recipe that had been prepared. At the beginning it was shown that 75% of those attending were not following a gluten-free diet but were hopeful for more information. 25% of those that attended had been following a gluten-free diet for many years because of the presence of celiac disease in their family.

During the class, many things were discussed such as: What is gluten? What is celiac disease? Who should follow a gluten-free diet? Who should not be on a gluten-free diet? Where do you find gluten free foods? Is there a difference in cost at the grocery store?

At the end of the class, it was determined that 75% of participants had purchased gluten-free product before but none of them were using gluten-free products or the gluten-free diet for weight control. 75% also reported that they learned something new about gluten-free products and gluten-free diets. 100% agreed that they enjoyed the recipe that they sampled and felt that they could make good buying choice if they decided to purchase gluten-free products.
