Planning Unit: Harlan County CES

Major Program: Farmer's Markets

Plan of Work: Improve and sustain agriculture production

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

After being without a consistent farmers market for several years, 2017 brought about a new venue for Harlan Countians to sell and purchase fresh produce, crafts, and prepared foods.  With the recent economic situation, as well as an increase in health awareness, a local famer suggested the creation of the market.  The farmer contacted the Extension Office, Pine Mountain Settlement School and Harlan Tourism and asked them to play a role in creating a farmers market.  These groups came together to help implement the Harlan County Farmers Market which began in June 2017.  With the creation of the Market, the Harlan County Agriculture Agent, working with market personnel, helped to provide insight and education information by providing training opportunities for market vendors.  The agents and staff also attended the market to provide up to date information on gardening and preparation of fresh produce.  As the market came to a close, its first year 19 vendors that made $9,300 to supplement incomes.  Also, with the creation of the market, downtown Harlan, through a steering committee has received a Local Foods, Local Places assistance grant to bring local foods into businesses as well as revitalizing downtown through the arts.  The funds from this grant will allow the market to become a viable business location in downtown.
