Plan of Work: Providing Positive Youth Development Experience

Outcome: Initial Outcome

4-H has traditionally been open to youth ages 9-18 years old. Within recent years, Muhlenberg County 4-H has created an opportunity for youth ages 5-8 years old called CloverBuds. This summer we held our second 4-H CloverBud Day Camp where fifty-five youth attended the Camp at the UK Extension Office. The youth were led through a series of engaging classes throughout Paradise Park by teen leaders. The day was made possible by the 30 plus volunteers that taught classes, served as group leaders, and prepared lunch. Discovering 4-H was the theme for the day camp. Youth traveled throughout Paradise Park exploring classes including woodworking, outdoor cooking, farm animal education, crafts, fitness, recreation, camp dances, and nature. The goal of the day camp was to provide a safe, engaging environment to education youth on the opportunities of the 4-H Youth Development Program. These opportunities highlighted the 4-H core curriculum areas: Science, Engineering and Technology, Agriculture, Family and Consumer Sciences, Health, Communications, Leadership and Natural Resources. Special guests of the day included: local farm owners, students from the Muhlenberg County Job Corps Center, two Ky Division of Forestry Rangers, 4-H club leaders, Judy McGehee 4-H Program Assistant, Vi Wood SNAP-Ed Program Assistant, Mary Beth Riley Family and Consumer Sciences Agent, and numerous caring teen and adult volunteers. Youth participants from the day said they are more likely to become actively engaged in 4-H now, learned new information about animals, a new form of exercise (yoga), and made a new friend as a result of CloverBud Day Camp.
