Outcome: Initial Outcome

Kentucky has the seventh highest adult obesity rate in the nation, according to The State of Obesity: Better Policies for a Healthier America released August 2017. Kentucky's adult obesity rate is currently 34.2 percent, up from 21.7 percent in 2000 and from 12.7 percent in 1990. By offering varieties of nutritious foods, youth will feel empowered to choose healthier food options. In cooperation with the school administration, the 4-H agent in Livingston County introduced 4-H Food Explorers to the elementary schools in May 2017. The samplings are from recipes available in the CHOP CHOP magazines and www.chopchopmag.org. The recipe and magazine is shared with each sampling. 97% of the youth choose to sample the recipe offered. 100% of the youth surveyed indicated that they would ask their parents to help them prepare the recipe at home. The youth eagerly wait every month to see what new fruit or vegetable 4-H Food Explorers will introduce to them. One parent called the Livingston County Cooperative Extension Office to share how excited her daughter was about sharing the CHOP CHOP magazine to prepare the No Bake Oatmeal Cookies. The principal at South Livingston County remarked how well the program was received by the youth, staff and parents. Youth are excited about trying new and exciting foods!
