The Floyd County Extension Master Gardeners In-Training are already doing outstanding community service. The final step for the twelve individuals to become full Master Gardeners is to complete their forty hours of volunteer service by April 2020. Most of these individual are well on their way to completing their required hours of service. Most are doing community service projects by working with raised bed gardening at two local nursing home facilities, two senior housing sites, two low income housing centers, a drug treatment facility and a homeless shelter. Some are promoting small scale gardening and conducting demonstrations at various food pantries. Others are working an educational booth at the local farmers market. Their efforts are already being recognized by the community. Local businesses and individuals are donating materials, supplies and plants for their projects. The value of donated goods and services are nearly $1,000 at this time. The Master Gardeners have provided two hundred and fifty hours of service to date. They will be keeping records on the amount of produce that each site provides to the clientele. The director of one of the nursing home facilities stated that the residents have truly benefited by spending time with the volunteers in the gardens.
