Bringing Local Foods to the Table

Planning Unit: Woodford County CES

Major Program: Local Food Systems

Plan of Work: Sustainable Agriculture

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Farms are an essential and diverse part of Kentucky’s economy, contributing billions of dollars each year across the State. In Woodford County alone, agriculture and the businesses that support it are responsible for one out of three jobs and $565 million in annual revenue.  The Extension Service continues to work toward a strong agricultural community and local food system.   In an effort to promote agriculture, local farms, and producers in the County, the Woodford County Cooperative Extension Service hosted the second annual Woodford County Farm to Table dinner. The dinner was made possible by a grant from the Kentucky Proud Farm to Fork program which seeks to increase awareness of the local food movement, as well as sponsorships from local businesses.

This locally sourced, four course meal was created and served by renowned Woodford County Chef, Ouita Michel. Over 80% of the produce and meat for the event was sourced from Woodford County farms. Nearly $1100 went back to these farms. Some of the farmers were invited to the dinner to speak about the importance of supporting local farms and food. Other guest speakers included agriculture commissioner, Ryan Quarles, Chef Ouita Michel, and dinner sponsors. Over $1300 in proceeds from the event supported the local Wooford County Farmers Market.

The event sold out at 150 tickets in less than two weeks and participants all had very enthusiastic written feedback. Note card comments were collected with this posed fill-in-the-blank statement - “This dinner is valuable because…..” Below are some of the written comments we received:

Why do we do these dinners? Because it brings us together. There are many things that divide us these days, but gathering around a table to share food is a powerful way to come together. Kentucky agriculture and a rural way of life are the fertile ground that grows this great tasting food. When we come together over a homegrown meal – planned, prepared, and served with care – great things happen. That’s why. - Chef Ouita Michel

I came because agriculture is very important to me and Kentucky. For our economy, landscape, and culture. The dinner was delicious! – Farm to Table Dinner Attendee

Because it provides an opportunity to remind us of the real reasons we love Woodford County – the good, old country feel – the heritage and connecting to the farm land and the people. – Farm to Table Dinner Attendee
