In January 2017, Calloway County 4-H started a new family experience for Hispanic families called "!La Diversion Familiar!." The group uses the Hispanic Cultural Curriculum from National 4-H Council. Other topics of interest to the group are also explored. Each time the group meets at the Extension Office. During the summer the group has met for two hours classes. During the school year the meeting were an hour to an hour and one half in length. Each time the group practices some English and Spanish words. The 4-H agent has taken a Spanish courses but in these sessions learning always occurs. The group works on pronunciation and meaning of words. The lessons from the curriculum are written in English and in Spanish for all audiences. Both are available to the group. A nutritious snack is made by the children and the parents in these meetings. A craft or some take home project of culture is made.  In this group relationships are being formed and trust is being established. Future 4-H leaders  and supporters will come out of this club.  Twenty youth and seven parents and grandparents have attended.  Greater respect and understanding of our world and different people is an outcome of this group. In July, families had their meeting at the Central Park and painted rocks for Murray Rocks as well as swimming in the Splash Park.  Twenty-six youth and family members shared watermelon.  At that summer event, a schedule for the year was shared.  At the September meeting 19 youth and parents painted pumpkins and shared caramel apples.Youth involved in !La Diversion Familiar! are becoming involved in other 4-H programs.  Three youth attended the recent fall break camps and Soggy Bottom Water activities.   Integrating and including all youth and families in UK Cooperative Extension programs and opportunities continues to make our community stronger and ready for the future.
