Food Safety

Planning Unit: Fayette County CES

Major Program: Home & Consumer Horticulture

Plan of Work: Making Healthy Lifestyle Choices and Citizen Education

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

Recent produce recalls and health issues related to our food supply have concerned many of our residents who desire to take an active role in the food they consume. Fayette County Horticulture staff and volunteers offer numerous classes about growing food and best management practices. Our classes are well attended and we receive numerous comments related to lifestyle changes. We surveyed our participants and were pleased to learn that in addition to the obvious benefits of growing produce, 43% of those responding indicated an increase in physical activity from gardening efforts and 70% have learned greener, earth friendly practices for yard and garden. One client shared, "Sone people describe thier gardens as English Country- I describe mine as Extension Garden. Most of the new materials in my garden spaces are due to materials and info from my classes. I learned so much this year, I actually planted a garden and and was able to eat food I had grown myself. It was great to know exactly what had(not) been sprayed on my food. I'm now confident enough to plan not only my own garden, but those for my sister and mother as well. Thank you so much."
