Outcome: Initial Outcome

The Floyd County Family & Consumer Science Agent was approached by the school staff at Floyd County Elementary School for nutrition education. It had been expressed that the students lacked basic nutrition education and the schools reach out to the Floyd County Extension Service as an external resource. The Floyd County Family & Consumer Science Program presented the first lesson of the “Wellness In Kentucky” curriculum. The program entailed identifying foods from each food group, balance, and variety. The program was presented to a 15 classes that consisted of a total of 238 students. Students completed a survey prior to the program. Eighty-six percent incorrectly identified the food groups and lacked knowledge in balanced eating habits, moderation, and variety. After the hour long program, 71 percent of students successfully identified the food groups.
