The Cadiz/Trigg County Farmers Market is a great source of fresh vegetables and fruits for our local community. 2017-18 saw a new location for the twice-weekly market and the addition of a new market location one time per week in the parking lot of the Trigg County Health Department. This location was added to make it easier for WIC participants to redeem WIC Farmers Market Nutrition Program vouchers. This move was successful shown by the increase in the redemption rates from 46% in 2016 to 67% in 2017.
In March, the Extension FCS agent facilitated the kick-off of the 201Farmers Market season with an orientation meeting for vendors. Fifteen people representing 10 vendors attended. The Extension FCS agent also serves as the educator for the Farmers Market vendors. Six vendors were certified to participate in the Senior Nutrition Program and five were certified to participate in the WIC Nutrition Program. Four vendors renewed their sample certification and one new vendor was trained and received Produce Best Practices Certification and sample certification.
The Extension FCS agent set up informational booths at the Farmers Market on four dates. Topics were Grill Safety, Health Awareness, and Plate it Up! Kentucky recipes. Each promotion featured health and food safety information as well as Plate It Up! Kentucky Proud recipes and samples. 180 Farmers Market customers were reached through these promotions
The Extension FCS agent and Cadiz Main Street Manager worked together to kick off a Farmers Market Kids Club on June 27, 2018. A grant from the Cadiz Rotary Club was awarded to help fund this program. 5 sessions are being planned with activities and tastings geared toward children. Each time they participate, the children receive $5.00 in vouchers to spend on fruits and vegetables at the Farmers Market.
