Trimble County Drug Educational Series

Author: Jane Proctor

Planning Unit: Trimble County CES

Major Program: Making Healthy Lifestyle Choices (general)

Plan of Work: Making Healthy Lifestyle Choices Substance/Drug Awareness

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

According to the 2017 Kentucky State Police Report, Crime in Kentucky, drug/narcotic offenses increased 10.47% from 2016 to 2017.   There were 184 drug arrests and 86 drug/narcotic offenses in Trimble County.  Based on this data, it is evident that there is a strong need for substance abuse education, prevention and intervention in Trimble County. The number of diverted prescriptions and illegal drugs, overdoses, thefts, arrests, court cases, and medical/financial consequences of drug abuse continue to negatively impact a large number of families in the community. In order to educate the public and to address the variety of substance abuse issues impacting our community, the Trimble County Cooperative Extension Service partnered with the Trimble CARES Drug Coalition to offer the Trimble County Drug Education Series in 2017 and 2018. The series included topics such as: How Substance Abuse/Misuse Affects our Community, Naloxone Training, Understanding Addition, Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), Vaping, and Spot the Pot. Prior to the series in 2017, the Trimble County EMS did not carry Naloxone because of the lack of understanding and education of the potential life-saving impact. NARCAN® training was provided and through a small grant, the Trimble County EMS was provided 30 NARCAN®  kits. As a result, the county policy was changed and now Trimble County EMS carries NARCAN®. Also as a result, a policy was added to the Trimble County School District for the upcoming 2019-2020 year and school personnel will be trained on the administration of NARCAN®. Each school in the district will have NARCAN® on site if needed.
