Life skills development plays an important role in every child’s development by establishing opportunities for self-reliance and self-confidence and was identified by the 4-H Council as a priority. Oldham County 4-H organized a new 4-H club this past year focusing on woodworking skills. Club members are now able to identify wood types, utilize a variety of woodworking tools, assemble and fasten wood pieces by following plans and most importantly teach others the skills they have learned.
The club was a collaborative effort led by the 4-H leader involving an Oldham County Homemaker family, Oldham County Schools and the Boy Scouts. The club met at the newly constructed Oldham County Schools Technical Center which was a game changer having the use of a full technical woodworking lab.
The 4-H club members hosted and taught a woodworking project for the Boy Scouts which enabled 25 scouts to receive their woodworking badge, each scout constructed a blue bird box. 4-H members also made birdhouses and donated those to Creasey Mahan Nature Preserve in Goshen, Kentucky.
The Club Leader shared the following, "I have watched the members develop a confidence that comes with practicing new skills and by doing something hands on. I have watched each of them grow by becoming more expressive with their ideas and becoming leaders. You can't get those things unless you put yourself out there. They did that and now they are becoming the future of 4-H, our community, and our world".
Club members and their parents are enrolled in 4-H Camp, the club recruited four male adult camp leaders.
