Farming is known as the most dangerous occupation. This is especially true of part time farmers who 

must get the most work done in the limited time they have. Boone County has a large number of part time producers. We have seen our share of pesticide, chainsaw, tractor, livestock and 4 wheeler accidents. The stress of having multiple tasks to perform can lead to mistakes, and cutting corners.

Studies at the University of Kentucky College of Nursing show this is a statewide issue for farmers.

Not only are accidents prevalent among the part time producers but statistics show homeowners and gardeners are subject to the same type of injuries.

The Boone County staff collaborated with Dr. Deborah Reed and Dale Dobson with the Kentucky Department of Agriculture Farm Safety Division to host a Farm Dinner Theater. Extension Agents and assistants divided into committees to prepare for the event. Scripts were prepared and county farmers and gardeners were the cast. The scripts detailed real farm and home accidents. 

Following the theater portion of the program Dr. Reed led a discussion of the safety precautions that would have eliminated the accidents. These included, sunscreen, wide brimmed hats, sunglasses, taking chainsaw safety classes, installing roll over devices on tractors. All of those attending were encouraged to check their farm and property for cell phone reception and to always have their phone with them. Gardeners and Farmers were given information on mixing, storing and applying chemicals. Of the 250 people attending 62% reported having an increased awareness of farm and home safety.

The response to this program has been extremely positive with many of those in attendance wanting to have this program on an annual basis.
