Planning Unit: Harlan County CES

Major Program: Woodland Education

Plan of Work: Utilizing, preserving and protecting Harlan County's Natural Resources

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Harlan County is comprised of 259,784 acres of forest land in which 93% is privately owned.  Educating landowners about their forested property as well as providing Kentucky Master Loggers to gain continuing education hours helped to make fall forestry programming a success.

The Harlan County Extension Service worked with the University of Kentucky to provide a five part “Woodlands Webinar Series: A Primer for Beginners.”  The series provided educational programing for landowners and Kentucky Master Loggers.   The five Certified Master Loggers in attendance received continuing education credits and allowed them to stay close to home while receiving the free continuing education.

Program evaluations received stated that those in attendance had increased their knowledge of woodland education as well as knew where they could turn to if they needed more information.  Participant’s evaluations also stated that they had an interest in contacting someone about their property in the near future.

In following up with landowners, one stated they enjoyed the programing and attended so they could learn more about managing their woodlands.  Another participant stated that they had just bought a track of woodland and the programs allowed them to make decisions on management and the next steps for that tract.   Master Loggers were appreciative of the free continuing education credits and the programs being close to home.
