Pasture Weeds

Author: Garrard Coffey

Planning Unit: Rockcastle County CES

Major Program: Pesticide Safety – Plant Pests

Plan of Work: Improve Livestock Production and Management Skills

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Noxious (or invasive) weeds can significantly decrease pasture production by taking nutrients away from grasses and shading. In recent years it has been very prolific and has caused major damage to pasture fields.

In the spring of 2019, in conjunction with the Kentucky Department of Agriculture, a demonstration program for controlling noxious weeds was offered in Rockcastle County. The collaboration included three farms who increased their knowledge how to properly calibrate sprayers, properly mix and handle chemicals, and proper application methods using a boomless sprayer.

Overall, 60 acres of pasture land in Rockcastle County was sprayed to demonstrate the effects of chemical use to control noxious weeds in pasture fields.  All three farms reported they were going to use the knowledge and skills gained to help manage their pastures and hay land in the future.
