Major Program: Forages
Plan of Work: Forages and Crop Management
Outcome: Initial Outcome
Seeing a void in programming based on discussions with, inquiries from, and needs of area clientele, I took the lead in bringing together ANR agents from 9 other Eastern Kentucky counties who also saw a need for a forage based program in our area. We have had face-to-face planning meetings, along with extended email chains, and have developed the Mountain Master Forager program. This is a 5 part, 10 county level based effort that is spaced out over a 9 month period offering various sessions based on the forage producer needs tailored to our part of the world. The extended offering period lets us work with the multiple seasons and address issues related to each of them. We have offered one session to this point and have the next 4 already planned, with presenters and locations already identified and in place. The sessions will focus on common forage issues that are shared by most all forage producers, but will also address some of the unique challenges that we face with our terrain which consist mostly of creek bottoms, slops and ridges, with little flat true agricultural land to be found.
