Outcome: Long-Term Outcome
The teenage pregnancy rate in Knox County is among the highest in the state of Kentucky- at a rate of 71 teen births per 1,000. To address this population, Knox County Cooperative Extension Service partnered with the Promise Neighborhood Grant through Berea College to offer a bi-monthly after-school program for young parents and their children. Parenting for Success incorporates education lessons from Nurturing Parenting Keys to Great Parenting, LEAP, Family Mealtime, and Moneywise. Participants gain knowledge and skills such as parenting skills, child development, family budgeting, and money management, nutrition, food safety, poison prevention, menu planning, and much more. This program is wrapping up its third year of being offered with some families attending since the beginning and a host of new families that have joined in the last 6 months. At the 6 month evaluation since the newer group of participants started attending, participants report that 100% gained new knowledge and skills that they incorporated in their daily lives; 80% tried a fruit or vegetable they had never eaten prior to the program, 75% claimed to have increased family meals and planned family activities.
