Planning Unit: Taylor County CES

Major Program: Urban Environments (water issues)

Plan of Work: Improving the Health and Quality of Life for all Taylor County Citizens

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

The horticulture agent collaborated with Campbellsville's local MS4 (Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System) Coordinator, and an extension associate who assists with the development and implementation of faculty led sustainability initiatives within communities. It was made known within the first meeting that a rebranding effort was needed to educate, and create a positive public opinion with the residents of Campbellsville.

The horticulture agent contacted the local university's design department for a student to create design options. Meetings were held to discuss and refine the designs. A vote was held on social media for the public to vote for the design elements they liked best. These elements, and ideas were then utilized when forming the final design of the MS4 logo. One hundred seventy two comments were made on the post. A dramatic increase from a past MS4 public outreach program.

The initial outcome is that the public learn more about MS4 from this project. Information was given during the voting about what MS4 is and their mission. The intermediate outcome is for the public to take what they have learned about MS4, and form a positive opinion about it. Finally, the long-term outcome is for the public to let the positive opinion that they form about MS4 carry over into their actions, which will result in a more environmentally sound community.

Since the completion of this project, the extension associate, the MS4 Coordinator, and the horticulture agent of the Taylor County have presented this logo process, and development to other MS4 Coordinators at the Stormwater Association Conference in Berea. The Coordinators were able to take these ideas back to their own communities.
