Planning Unit: Carroll County CES

Major Program: Natural Resources 4-H Core Curriculum

Plan of Work: Environmental Stewardship

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Thanks to a new volunteer, Carroll County 4-H has added a new club called wood science.  Through this program the leader had a power point presentation at every session which is a history lesson including logging and career opportunities as well a forestry lesson.   Our first project was preparing their wood to make a walking stick. 100 % of the attendees learned the following:

•            Identifying wood by bark, wood color, and aroma

•            Classifying wood as soft or hard in order to make decisions about end use.

•            Selecting wood for their walking cane project

•            Demonstrating proper use and safety with hand tools

•            Designing and creating a walking cane that can be entered in as many as three categories of county/state fair (their next project will be a wooden box with inlay)

•            Recognizing the relationship of trees to support different categories of birds and insects

  •     Exploring careers that involve natural resources

For six straight Saturdays, another project was made. Fifteen members had 100% attendance to complete their wooden treasure box..  The volunteer also purchased shirts for the members.  Thanks to him. five of these members joined the entrepreneur club and are working diligently to prepare wooden items to sell at the Kentucky State Fair.
