~~As the debate to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act continues, many seniors are concerned with rising health care costs. This cost is further complicated with the high price of prescription drug coverage. The Northern Kentucky Area Agents presented a program on Healthy Living from the Inside Out to 122 homemakers from eight counties to address some of these concerns. Through networking and a new collaboration, a local pharmacist voluntarily taught a session entitled, “Educate Before you medicate.” The following topics were included: talking to your pharmacist about all medicines taken; knowing the name of your medication; knowing what the medication is intended to do; knowing when and how to take medication and the side effects; knowing how long to take it, and what to do if you forget to take it; knowing how to store medication; and knowing if there is a generic version available. A written evaluation was provided after the session. Eighty returned the surveys representing a 66% return rate. Comments from participants included: Learned tonight: “how to take meds,” where to store my medicine,” and “much about prescriptions.” One thing to do after the program “move medications out of bathroom,” and “ask more questions of pharmacist.”A follow-up survey will be distributed in the winter to determine how the information presented in the session was utilized.
