Alzheimer’s Disease is the sixth leading cause of death in Kentucky, with 69,000 adults age 65 and over diagnosed in 2016. “Know the 10 Signs” is an evidenced-based program developed and distributed by the National Alzheimer’s Association. The Greater Kentucky Southern Indiana Alzheimer’s Association Chapter trained Extension Agents in 86 counties to help increase people’s knowledge of risk factors, understand the benefits of early diagnosis, and know what to do when risk factors are observed.
During 2017-2019, the Marshall County Family & Consumer Sciences agent presented “Know the 10 Signs of Alzheimer's” programs to 65 participants that included caregivers and community partners. Of those completing pre- and post-surveys, 95% reported increased confidence in early detection. All participants requested to receive the monthly Family Caregiver Bulletins available through county Family & Consumer Sciences newsletters. In addition, participants toured a local memory care center and learned about specialized care for dementia and Alzheimer’s patients.
One of the program sites, Calvert City First Presbyterian Church, planted a memory garden with flower bulbs that symbolize those affected by Alzheimer’s and bring honor to patients, caregivers and families. Each participant received flower bulbs to plant at home as a reminder to share the effects of the disease with others. The garden serves as a reminder of risk factors, early diagnosis, and where to go for help. As a result of the program there is evidence of increased awareness.
