According to the Whitley County 2018 Nutrition Education Program Annual Report, our program provides hands-on nutrition education to limited-resource audiences, focusing on: buying and preparing healthy foods, developing new meal planning and cooking skills, adopting new healthy lifestyle behaviors, and managing SNAP resources. There were 2,047 Whitley County residents with limited resources who participated in these lessons.
This year, with a new partnership, we were given the opportunity to provide a cooking class once a month at the Corbin Public Library. During the time some of these classes were given, some of the homeless population was present for a "White Flag" assistance program. The Nutrition Education Program calendar has served as the main source of information for this class. Each class the Family and Consumer Sciences Agent demonstrates the recipe and talks about the benefits of the ingredients and preparation methods.
According to the evaluations given so far, 100% of people have learned a new recipe to make with their family. The love the convenience of the one pot meals and the healthy ingredients, like kale. An evaluation is given at the end of each session and the program is planned to continue the rest of the year at the Corbin Public Library.
