Wayne County grain farmers participate in a corn and soybean yield contest each year. The program is designed to see who achieves the best yields in Wayne County in corn and soybeans. Most of the participants are small and beginning farmers. The KSU Small Farm Assistant and UK Ag Agent go out and measure these fields each time and have them weighed to have the correct yield per acre.
The Wayne County Extension office shares the production information to the area grain farmers to see if their production practices are similar to the high yielding neighbors.
The Ky Soybean Board is promoting an oil quality and protein content contest across KY. Because of this a sample of soybeans are taken by the KSU Small Farm Assistant with each yield entry and sent to the KY Soybean Association.
This past year one Wayne County farmer won first place in oil percent and protein content in Ky. We also had two other Wayne County farmers to take second place in each category. All three farmers received a significant financial reward from the KY Soybean Board.
By having a KSU Small Farm Assistant in Wayne County this allows the time for Wayne County grain farmers to participate in the yield contests.
Wayne County grain farmers are achieving some of the highest yields per acre across the state of KY according to the KY Agriculture Statistics.
