Civic groups in Frankfort, Kentucky have been attempting to revitalize Frankfort. These groups want to increase tourism, residential opportunities in the downtown area, and recreational use of the Kentucky River among other concerns. These civic groups see the Kentucky River Thorobred as a must have feature of Frankfort’s community.
Ed Wilcox, Kentucky State Unversity’s Watershed Research and Extension Associate and the manager of the Kentucky River Thorobred, sits on several committees. The Riverfront Development Committee seeks to revitalize Frankfort by making the Kentucky River and features along the river focal points of Frankfort. Another committee focuses on revitalizing downtown North Frankfort. Ed also engages in public conversations through On The Table meetings to, for example, determine an identify for Frankfort (should Frankfort be a college town?) or what features of Frankfort should be reimagined.
Through regular operations, the Thorobred reliably makes appearances on the river and during river related city events. Thorobred crew act as ambassadors to the city by directing residents and visitors to its features such as the Capital City Museum, Liberty Hall, Paul Sawyier Public Library, and local restaurants and businesses. During a Riverfront Development Committee meeting, several people, including Robin Antenucci, the Director of Frankfort Tourism, stated that having Kentucky State University and the Kentucky River Thorobred involved is crucial to Frankfort’s development. Regular attendance and creative input at meetings is recognized and appreciated.
The Kentucky River Thorobred has become a seasonal feature of Frankfort that residents expect to see. According to comments by residents, the Thorobred would be sorely missed if it were to cease operations. Such sentiments must be experienced to be truly appreciated.
