Purchase Area Extension Homemakers: Understanding Generational Differences

Author: Melissa Goodman

Planning Unit: Hickman County CES

Major Program: Kentucky Extension Leadership Development (KELD): Developing Core Leadership Skills

Plan of Work: Improve leadership skills, strengthen volunteerism, & promote community and economic development.

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Each generation is significantly different from those who preceded and followed it because each generation was shaped and molded by markedly different societal influences during its developmental years. In many cases, this difference in generational perspective can lead to misunderstanding and create conflict at home, work, or community activities.

In order to educate differing generations on the importance of recognizing generational differences within the Purchase Area Extension Homemaker Association, this session was chosen from the Kentucky Extension Leadership Development (KELD) modules. Raising awareness of attitudes, communication, and choices can all contribute to better relationships within families, workplaces, and organizations. Thirty-nine Purchase Area Extension Homemakers were trained in Understanding Generational Differences by the Extension Agent for Family and Consumer Sciences through train the trainer formatted sessions.

The participants gained knowledge to recognize and distinguish between the six different generation’s characteristics and values. 100% of participants were able to analyze how changes in society influence generational perspectives.  92% committed to conduct a self-examination of generational values in relation to their family and organizations generational makeup. These participants then shared the information with 514 Purchase Area Extension Homemaker Club members to increase understanding of generational differences within their sphere of influence of family, workplace and/or community.
