Breckinridge County is a rural community with limited physical activity resources for individuals and families. Thirty-four percent of the citizens report not exercising on a regular bases. In an effort to increase awareness and encourage families to be more active, the Get Moving Breckinridge County (GMBC) walking challenge was conducted for the second season in Fall 2018. The program was a collaboration with the Ben Johnson Elementary School STLP Get Fit Team, the Healthy Communities/Youth Coalition for Change and the Breckinridge County Extension Service FCS Program. The GMBC program was conducted 6 weeks which included weekly step logging, wellness newsletter Facebook post, healthy eating recipes and weekly prize drawings. Fifty-nine individuals participated in the program with 65 % completing the six week challenge and 82% logging in steps 4 or more of the weeks. Post surveys reported that 73% increased physical activity since participating in the GMBC program. Seventy-three percent also reported they plan to stay active after completing the program with 15% also reporting that they plan to make healthier food choices. When asked what they found most helpful about the program, 88.5% reported that the weekly prize drawings and 69% reported the weekly Facebook reminders. Participates shared comments that the program kept them motivated and held them accountable. Also one said it was, “fun, friendly competition, rewarding participation”. A total of 12,740,780 steps were logged averaging 6,370 miles walked. Ninety-six percent of the participants reported that they would participate again in the program. Suggestions for program improvement included adding a 5k, more recipes, and inviting PE teachers to get involve and have students to participate. Get Moving Breckinridge County provides a community initiative for all to be more active and make healthier lifestyle choices.
