Agent Meet and Greet

Author: Amanda Sears

Planning Unit: Madison County CES

Major Program: Home & Consumer Horticulture

Plan of Work: Unrelated to a specified County Plan of Work

Outcome: Initial Outcome

During 2018, there were changes in administration and specialist in the College of Agriculture Food and Environment.  Included in these changes were Dr. Craig Woods named as Interim Assistant Director for Agriculture and Natural Resources (ANR), Dr. Rachel Rudolph appointed as Vegetable Specialist, and Dr. Mark Williams as Horticulture Department Chair.

At the Horticulture Agent inservice in September of 2018, the agents wanted to plan an opportunity to introduce themselves to these individuals who were in new roles in the College.

The Madison County Horticulture agent collaborated with the Extension Director, the Kentucky Horticulture Council and the 2019 Fruit and Vegetable Conference committee to arrange a Meet and Greet luncheon during the conference.

Forty Five Horticulture and Agriculture Agents attended the session, in addition to the three guests.

At the meeting, the Agent acted as moderator. Each agent had a chance to introduce themselves to the group and say their name, what county they are from and how long they have been in extension. The three guests were asked to introduce themselves as well and tell what they hope to learn about horticulture in extension. After introductions, the administrators and specialist were able to ask agents for more information on certain topics.

Some topics covered included:

  • Home and Consumer Horticulture programs

  • Master Gardener Program and its impact on the state.

  • The Kentucky Horticulture Council

  • Impact of Horticulture on the economy of Kentucky

  • Programming done by agents across the state such as radio, newsletters, and field trials.

A follow up survey showed that 100% of those in attendance thought the event was helpful. The program guests all felt more knowledgeable about horticulture in Kentucky and extension programming.
