Over 90,000 miles of rivers and streams are found in Kentucky. These miles of stream touch Kentuckians every day. Streams provide flood control, wildlife habitat, recreation, and most importantly, a source of water that is used in thousands of ways. But, the quality of a stream is only as good as the land that surrounds and drains into it. That is why it is important to practice good stream stewardship. Metcalfe County 4-H presented a program “Making Good Choices for Our Future” participants. As a result of this program, 98% of the participants demonstrated an increase in understanding of the concept of stream stewardship and how to sort their recycling products. 97% of the participants showed an increase in knowledge regarding streams and the importance of keeping them clean. In a follow-up survey, 99% of participants took action to protect streams around their home and 87% of participants changed at least one habit and began to recycle.
