Plan of Work: Creating awareness of the impact of agriculture on daily life and developing marketable skills for

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

According to the US Department of Agriculture, one mouthful in three of the foods you eat directly or indirectly depends on pollination by honey bees.  Honey bee populations have been declining in Kentucky over the past ten or more years.  Education is key in helping protect honey bees as well as teaching beekeepers how to care for their hives.

The Greenup County Beekeepers Association was formed by a hand full of members in 2017.  The main focus of the Association is to educate local beekeepers and mentor beginning beekeepers.   Local Beekeepers have hosted two successful Bee Schools.   In 2019 the bee school doubled in attendance with individuals from Kentucky, Ohio and West Virginia attending.

The association has grown tremendously since 2017 now having more than forty members.  Their outreach has also been amazing.  In 2017/2018 the Beekeepers Association helped 5 beginning beekeepers during their entire first year.  Four of the five beekeepers had a successful first year.  This is a great success in encouraging our honey bee population.
