The Johnson County Extension Council identified offering local options for acquiring life skills as a program priority for the 2018-2019 Plan of Work. To address this need, local schools, teachers and extension personnel worked together to provide an opportunity in the area of Science, Technology and Engineering for local students. For the past few years free workshops called Science Discovery and Biotechnology Basics were offered to elementary students in grades 4-6 at the Johnson County Extension office. However, last year the demand for the programs outgrew the workshop format. The 4-H Youth Development Education Agent along with 4-H Program Assistant and local teachers discussed options to meet the demand for this SET programming. The program was reformatted to be delivered during monthly 4-H Club meeting times for all elementary level 4-6 graders, which ensures that every teacher can utilize the program for their students as a programming option. The science and biotechnology topics to be covered in the program are fingerprinting, Biotechnology career options, DNA module building, and forensics. As a result of being responsive to clientele needs, we educated 439 youth compared to last year’s total of 40 students in the area of Science, Engineering and Technology. Teachers are very excited that the new format has allowed their students a greater opportunity to participate and learn about in hands on experiential learning opportunities that the field of Science.
