Major Program: Leadership 4-H Core Curriculum

Plan of Work: Leadership Development in Adults and Youth

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

The Carter County Extension Council has indicated that young adults need to develop leadership skills so that they can become more involved in our community.   The Carter County 4-H Agent continuously encourages 4-H members to be involved in leadership building opportunities.

A long time 4-H member recently had this to say about her 4-H experiences:

I have always been around 4-H meetings and I have never missed a county fair. My 4-H story started when I was four and I had seen my big brothers show livestock and it looked like so much fun. So, at the age of four I showed my very first livestock fair project and have been hooked ever since. Now almost 14 years after that I have shown cattle, hogs, goats, chickens, sheep, and have helped some of the younger showers out with rabbits. I have done all kinds of other 4-H projects such as my family history, arts, and photography. I have participated in speeches and demonstrations. I do lawnmower driving and went to state this last year. My favorite thing to do is poultry judging and avian bowl, which I got 4th place at the state level and moved on to the National contest and my team placed 10th at the national level. I am very thankful that I got started in 4-H so early and I’m very thankful for my agent - she would do anything for any of us and she supports us nonstop and I’m so glad she pushes me to be the best me possible. Through 4-H I have become more of an outgoing person because my agent believes in me 100%.  She makes me do things that are out of my comfort zone and most of the time I really enjoy it.

This is just one example of the leadership building opportunities that over three hundred Carter County 4-H members are exposed to each year.
