Major Program: Natural Resources 4-H Core Curriculum

Plan of Work: Protecting the Environment

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

For the past seven years, Harrison County 4-H has partnered with our local Soil Conservation District, Farm Bureau, and school system to give every student in either 4th or 5th grade a hands-on learning opportunity at North Central 4-H Camp.  Teachers in Harrison County have stressed the importance of youth having hands-on science experiences as a way of retaining knowledge in core tested areas.  4-H Environmental Education Camp is an overnight event that focuses on water quality, soil conservation, animal science, natural resource, and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) educational opportunities for almost 300 students and adults on an annual basis.  A need was identified by local educators to provide lesson-assistance in a way that kids could retain and recall subjects introduced in the classroom.  In addition, students are able to work together to complete tasks, sharpen communication and teamwork skills, as well as build responsibility during meal and cabin time.  This program is provided at no cost to the students, due to our community partners who have identified this opportunity as a top priority for our local Harrison County students!  This past year, 285 students and adults attended the overnight camp experience, 85 percent reporting an increase in understanding the importance natural resource and conservation education.
