Reaching a Broad Community Audience

Author: Anthony Tackett

Planning Unit: Bourbon County CES

Major Program: Home & Consumer Horticulture

Plan of Work: Producers-Local Food Systems

Outcome: Initial Outcome

One area the Bourbon Extension Office continues to focus on is using a wide range of media to efficiently reach a broad community audience.  Currently the Horticulture program uses multiple media platforms to advertise Extension programs including; YouTube, Facebook, direct paper mail, newspaper articles, email news lists and radio programs.  The use of all these outlets in combination has resulted in an increase in local resident participation in programs that were not previously listed on core contact lists maintained at the Extension office.  Recently, expanded efforts have been made with other Horticulture Agents to coordinate state level educational radio programs that reach a much broader regional audience.  So far this year the Bourbon Horticulture program has contributed five state level  radio programs covering a broad range of horticulture topics to these efforts.   These radio programs go out to thousands of listeners and represent the comprehensive efforts undertaken to more efficiently promote Extension programs and resources.  Local residents have often expressed an appreciation for this varied advertising and promotion approach and have often  demonstrated a wide range of  preferences on how they prefer to be contacted.
