In today’s fast paced society, we are often more concerned about social media than our own physical well being.  For instance, according to the 2016-17 data from the National Survey of Children’s Health KY ranks 3rd in the nation (19.3%) of kids 10-17 years of age being obese or overweight.  At the same time it is reported that youth 12-17 in KY have a significantly lower amount of physical activity (a minimum of 60 minutes per day) than the national average of 18.5%.  4-H members enrolled in livestock projects learn proper nutrition for their project animals and the importance of reading a feed tag. At the same time it is also important that they learn to how to read a food nutrition label, follow directions and how to make a meal from scratch.  During their monthly November meeting livestock club members were divided into groups where they proceeded to make spaghetti for everyone in attendance. Some compared the fat content while frying two types of ground beef, made fresh sauce from canned tomatoes and adding spices,  others were charged with cutting onions & peppers and finally some had to read directions when preparing crescent rolls and how to turn on an oven!  In doing so they also did some taste testing & label reading comparing store bought pasta sauce with the home made.  Not only did they discover a tremendous difference in taste with the homemade but also found that the canned sauce contained a high amount of sodium with virtually no flavor advantage.  Another interesting fact was they used whole wheat spaghetti pasta instead of what one typically buys and found it to be more filling and appealing in taste.
