Creating and Maintaining Family Traditions Program Success Story

Strong families play an important role in the community and contribute to a healthy society overall.  Family traditions are just one example of how families can create a sense of connection, closeness, emotional safety, security, and stability.  To help strengthen families, the Harrison, Fayette, Madison and Scott County FCS Extension service offered the program, “Creating and Maintaining Family Traditions” to the general public six months ago. The program emphasized ways in which the creation or maintenance of family traditions contributes to building strong families.  66 total people participated in the program during the month of April 2018.  Of the 35 participants who completed 6-month follow-up evaluations, 24 reported that they maintained a family tradition, 23 participants created a new family tradition and 24 participants encouraged their families to participate in the tradition.

As a result of this program, participants learned (repetitive ideas/quotes from participants):

  • Celebrate birthdays with dinners
  • Family reunions
  • All Family Members Try to meet at Thanksgiving
  • Documenting family history, events & traditions
  • To celebrate a baby child after 100 days from she was born
