Planning Unit: Campbell County CES

Major Program: Local Food Systems

Plan of Work: Youth Agriculture Education

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Nestled in the urban sector of the county, Newport High School has a diverse student body where 100% of the school is enrolled in the federal free and reduce lunch program. The lack of knowledge of where our food comes from is the catalyst of this afternoon 21Centry program. Meeting weekly on Friday afternoon, Agriculture agent, 4H program assistant and Horticulture agent provide hands on programming for the youth. Introducing topics such has beef production, seed biology, equine science, and fresh food tasting is the scheduled in class programs. In addition, quarterly field trips have been arranged to view Agriculture and Horticulture operations that coordinate with the classroom activities. The unknown, and unfamiliarity about agricultural and horticultural science has planted a seed of curiosity in the minds of the youth. “I wish all of our food tasted this good” commented one of the high school youth club members. A school garden has been discussed. The students’ energy and motivation keeps this after school program growing. We plan to continue classroom and outside field trips to expose students of career opportunities and the truth about where our food comes from.
