Plan of Work: Leadership Development

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Henderson County Extension, like many extension programs in the state of Kentucky, rely on volunteers to aid in planning, implementing, and evaluating programs. This partnership with volunteers brings upon the necessity of the Volunteer Administration Academy, or VAA, to improve the level of competence of the Extension professional in generating, educating, mobilizing, and sustaining volunteer programs, to expand volunteer involvement on the county level, and to reach underserved audiences through volunteer delivery methods.

The Extension professional conducted a SWAT analysis to determine the county’s needs. The results determined a greater need in volunteer recruitment, empowering teen leaders, and the revealed the importance of making an impact in the community. A marketing packet was created by members of the VAA and was disseminated in the county. Volunteers were recruited for the Cloverbud Club Program, an Advanced Culinary Instructor, and the 4-H Council. So far five new volunteers have picked up volunteer packets and requested information. Since VAA we have recruited three new 4-H Council members and have identified two club leaders for Advanced Culinary Club and they have had three club meetings! Henderson County 4-H also took a record number of teen leaders for 4-H Camp and have twelve teen leaders to help lead the 4-H Summer Day Camp!

With more focus on the programs being delivered to clientele, it is imperative volunteers are properly trained and being on board with Extension’s mission of being a grassroots organization. The information learned through Volunteer Administration Academy will have a long-term effect on Henderson County Extension for years to come.
