Knowing how to safely participate in recreational activities is important for people of all ages. Scott County 4-H agents collaborated with the Scott County FCS agent, SNAP Ed assistant, WEDCO, local fire, ems, police, SWAT, sheriff's office, and hospital to conduct a Safety Day. The event was held at Georgetown College for three hours one Saturday in the fall. It took place immediately after a Safety Day parade down Main Street in Georgetown. The event was advertised through the various partnerships, as well as through the Scott County Cooperative Extension website and Facebook pages. Flyers were also posted around Scott County. The participating community partners set up booths with hands-on activities and displays. There were live demonstrations on fire safety, as well as vehicle safety. There were emergency vehicles on site for participants to look at and sit in, including two emergency helicopters. Scott County FCS had a booth offering kits to help properly dispose of unused prescription medicines. SNAP Ed had a booth showing proper ways to wash your hands and protect against germs. Scott County 4-H had a booth focusing on ATV safety. The booth had ATVs on display for participants to view and sit on. There were examples of the proper type of safety gear that should be worn when riding. Materials on ATV safety were available at the booth. A wheel was also at the booth for participants to spin and answer a question about ATV safety. Prizes were given to those that spun the wheel. Approximately 200+ people attended the event, visited the booths, and viewed the demonstrations. A participant at the 4-H booth said they were glad they saw the flyer for Safety Day and their child said it was the best day ever! Scott County Cooperative Extension has already started meeting with the participating partners to begin planning for Safety Day 2019!
