Kentucky Core Content for 4th grade students focuses on educating youth on the natural systems that shape the physical layout of the Earth’s surface. An important aspect of this standard focuses on helping youth to make observations and measurements to provide evidence of the effects of weathering or the rate of erosion by water, ice, wind, or vegetation. In order to help students meet this goal, 4-H utilized the hands-on learning model to provide students the opportunity to conduct a stream study without leaving the classroom.
Streams are a critically important aspect of the Earth’s surface, serving as a means to transport water through a watershed. Streams provide flood control, trap sediments, recycle nutrients, provide habitats for biological communities, and sustain high water quality.
Working closely with science teachers at 4 of the counties 6 elementary schools, 4-H was able to bring a stream table into 4th grade classrooms in order for students to experience a first-hand view of how streams are formed. More than 200 students were able to experience the effects of weathering and erosion by water. Pre and post program evaluations were used to determine the potential success of the program. After compiling all evaluation results, the following data was summarized:
• 91% of students reported increased understanding on how streams are formed
• 79% were able to correctly identify the main parts of a meandering stream
• 77% were able to make connections with real-world examples at the conclusion of the program
