Plan of Work: Making Healthy Choices

Outcome: Initial Outcome

According to the CDC, in recent years children are eating more fruits, but are still not reaching recommended daily intake for vegetables. In order to help preschoolers understand the importance of making vegetables a significant part of their diet, the Family and Consumer Sciences Agent in Lyon County initiated movie night for all Lyon County preschoolers. More than 40 children and their families attended a showing of the movie Ratatouille.  By incorporating the antics of the movie character, Chef Remy, into the lesson, participants learned more about myPlate and learned new ways to include vegetables into their children’s diets.  After the event, it was reported by the teachers and parents that many of the students were more eager to try a new vegetable and that students were able to identify new and different vegetables when asked. Because of the success of movie night, a family night has also been scheduled in the spring, this time to focus on the importance of family meal time.
