Plan of Work: Promoting Healthy Lifestyles

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

Oldham County is rated as one of the wealthiest counties in Kentucky.  Unfortunately, not everyone in Oldham County is wealthy.   Each month, more than 70 residents of LaGrange, county seat of Oldham County, receive food from the Dare to Care mobile food bank.  These recipients struggle to make ends meet with limited or fixed incomes.   Before the food is distributed the Family and Consumer Science Agent presents a Cooking and Nutrition class.  Budgeting for food purchases is always emphasized.  Economical, nutritious recipes are demonstrated and tasting is available.   Participants are encouraged to grow container gardens if they live in an apartment or have physical disabilities.   More than 25 participants reported that they did not have to purchase a tomato all summer because they had grown their own.  Several clients also reported that they even shared some of their tomatoes with neighbors, family, and friends.  This amounts to an average savings of over $10.00 per month.  Every individual who attends the cooking class also receives the Moneywise newsletter.
