Annual 4-H Horticulture Day Camp

Author: Kara Back-Campbell

Planning Unit: Taylor County CES

Major Program: Agriculture 4-H Core Curriculum

Plan of Work: Commercial and Homeowner Horticulture Education

Outcome: Initial Outcome

The second annual Horticulture Day Camp was held this past summer for 4-Hers. This camp not only gives kids an opportunity to participate in fun summer activities, but it also is a fun educational opportunity as well. The 4-H kids learned about various horticulture topics such as plant propagation, pollinators, and how the care of different types of plants can be unique, for example succulents in relation to a willow tree.

The 4-Hers also prepared their own lunch. They learnedabout vegetables that were currently in season, such as fresh sweet corn, andsummer squash. They used these vegetables within the recipes. They learnedabout the health benefits of the produce they were eating.

The main goal of the program is to teach kids about horticulture, and to have an appreciation for it. Students are given a survey to measure their current knowledge, and another survey afterward to see what new knowledge they have retained from the program. Personal testimonies have also occurred about the program. 4-Hers who participate in this program have commented on how their willow tree grew roots, and is still alive after receiving care instructions from the horticulture agent.

The Horticulture Day camp is offered each year. It is made possible by collaboration and support between the 4-H and horticulture agent, as well as the EFNEP assistant, FCS, and ANR agents.
